Antibiotic use and resistance in poultry value chains in India

The poultry sector in India has undergone a major change in the past two decades, with the market for broiler meat accounting for half of the total market for meat. To meet the increasing demand for broiler meat in the country, there is wide use of antibiotics as growth promoters in broiler production.

This project therefore aims to understand the consumption patterns of key antibiotics in poultry farms in Bangalore and Guwahati, India. The project evaluates the use, knowledge and practices pertaining to antibiotics in the poultry value chains, and identifies strategies and incentives to optimise the use of antibiotics.
