Africa, Eastern and Southern AfricaThe Government of Uganda developed an antimicrobial resistance national action plan (2018–2023) to guide the implementation of interventions to prevent and control antimicrobial resistance in the country.
The Boosting Uganda's Investment in Livestock Development project (2019–2023), led by the International Livestock Research Institute, supports the implementation of the national action plan through its research component on antimicrobial resistance.
The aim of the research is to understand current antimicrobial use in smallholder and commercial poultry production systems in Uganda, assess risks to humans from poultry-associated antimicrobial resistance, support evidence-based policy dialogue for antimicrobial surveillance strategies, and develop capacities within the poultry sector to prevent and control antimicrobial resistance.
