Use of alternatives (probiotics) to antimicrobial in an on-station trial in fattening pigs, Quang Ninh province, Vietnam

With the aim to reduce the use of antimicrobials (AM) in pig production and in the line with National Action Plan for AMU/AMR in livestock production and aquaculture ILRI leads a research activity in Quang Ninh province of Vietnam to evaluate the effectiveness of probiotic added into pig feed in terms of fattening productivity including pig health. Objective of this activity is to assess if probiotic added to the feed reduce or even replace AMU while maintain production performance in fattening pigs. 

The research is conducted in partnership with Thai Nguyen University of Agriculture and Fishery (TUAF), Hanoi University of Public Health and private sector partners namely Bio Spring and Green Farm.  The experiment is implemented as an on-station (fattening farm) using a randomized controlled trial (RCT) approach with three pig groups (each 30 pigs) allocated across 5 different pens (each 6 pigs) which will be fed by three types of diet as follows:   

  • T1-Treatment group 01: Feed added probiotic (produced by BioSpring®)
  • T2-Treatment group 02: Feed added antimicrobials (Tylosin) 
  • C-Control group: Feed without probiotic and antimicrobials

Data to monitor production performance for each group include pig health, treatments, weight gain, back fat measurement and feed usage and are monitored daily or monthly aligned with a final cost benefit analysis. In parallel AMU, antimicrobial resistance (AMR) profiles  and antimicrobial residuals (liver and pork) are recorded monthly or at slaughter respectively. The trial is carried out over the entire fattening period of four months.
